Teaching and Learning

The Victorian Curriculum is the framework that supports and informs all curriculum planning at Newstead Primary School. A school-wide approach is adopted to design a clear scope and sequence as a continuum across all learning areas. There is a strong focus on English and Mathematics.
The current class structure consists of four multi-aged classes. Specialist programs include Art, Science, Auslan and Choir.
The school offers a wide variety of extra curricula and extension programmes, which include excursions, year level camps, environmental activities, garden program and participation in cluster enrichment days. These may be aligned to sport, maths, critical thinking or the Arts.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in individualised music lessons for piano and/or guitar. These private tuition lessons are arranged between the music teacher/s and the students family and take place during school time.
A number of programs underpin the school’s approach to the development of student well being.
Newstead Primary has a strong focus on literacy and numeracy.
Reading
Junior students are taught the concepts of print, phonic knowledge, word and sentence grammar, and visual language. Students are taught strategies to build their comprehension, accuracy, fluency and to extend their vocabulary. We build our reading muscles by reading at home every day, and encourage parents to read with and chat about the book their child is reading.
The school prides itself on the great range and diversity of camps and excursions that it offers its students annually.
