Welcome Back

A big welcome back to school this week for all our staff and students, and a special welcome to our new Prep students and families. It has been a smooth and calm start to the year despite the building works and staff changes, and it has been wonderful to see all those happy faces each day! Thank you to everyone in the School Community: staff, parents and students who have all made me feel so welcome this week. It has been lovely meeting so many of you.

I have taught in Victoria, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and NSW in a wide variety of schools: large and small, State and Independent, urban and rural, and most recently at Baringhup and Maldon. I have taught across all year levels, and have a strong interest in literacy and numeracy. I am really excited to be working with you at Newstead this term, and I look forward to building on the strengths of the school community.

We also welcome Millie Lowndes in Grade 5/6, and Annie Betts in the Art room on short term contracts. The principal position, and both teaching positions will be advertised in the next few weeks, and we hope to announce the successful candidates later in the term.

We will be having learning conversations with parents on Monday 19th February. This short meeting gives you an opportunity to share information about your child, and to discuss their learning goals for the term. Notes will be sent home on Monday with instructions on booking a time. The School Swimming program will run from February 12th-16th, with the swimming carnival on Friday 23rd February . We look forward to parents helping with supervision walking to the pool.

In the classrooms students have been taking part in Start-up Week, focusing on our school values, setting up protocols for positive behavior, getting to know each other and settling in to our school routine. I hope you have been hearing all about it at the end of each day. If you find it hard to get much information from your child about their day, try asking who they played with, what story they read, who they worked with, what they are working on in math's, and to name three good things about their day.

This year we are implementing positive education through Berry St and Respectful Relationships. Staff will be focusing on High Impact Teaching Strategies.
